TOP 10 MOMENTS OF 2021-22 — #7: GROWLERS WOMEN MAKE ECHL HISTORY
7) Growlers Women Make ECHL history
The Growlers organization is proud to have some of the hardest-working women in the sports industry on our roster.
From the front office to the locker room and everywhere in between, women occupy many top positions within the organization.
Two of those women in particular broke barriers in their respective positions and became trailblazers for future generations of women who want to work in professional sports.
When colour commentator Kelly-Anne Roberts first strapped on her headset in the broadcast booth in November 2021, she became the first-ever woman to work full-time as a colour commentator in ECHL history. She spent the duration of the 2021-22 season in the broadcast booth alongside broadcaster Chris Ballard and fellow colour commentator Ben Murphy and is hopeful to return for the upcoming season.
Later in the season, with Growlers Head Coach Eric Wellwood unable to perform his duties due to Covid protocols, the Toronto Maple Leafs jumped in and offered up their Director of Player Development and Hockey Hall of Famer Danielle Goyette to help fill the void.
What the Maple Leafs didn’t know is that they were helping make history.
When Goyette made her debut behind the bench on February 3 as the Growlers hosted the Reading Royals, she became the first woman to serve as a coach in ECHL history. Her tenure with the Growlers was temporary and only lasted two games, but that was more than enough time for Goyette to make history.
