Seth Hyde joins commentary team on Saturday night

ST. JOHN’S, NL – The Newfoundland Growlers, ECHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, are proud to announce that local broadcasting phenom, 14-year-old Seth Hyde of St. John’s, will be making his professional broadcasting debut alongside Growlers play-by-play broadcaster Chris Ballard as the Growlers host the Trois-Rivieres Lions on Saturday, January 7 at the Mary Brown’s Centre.

Hyde, an ninth-grade early French immersion student at MacDonald Drive Junior High, rose to prominence in the Newfoundland and Labrador hockey community during the recent Covid-19 pandemic when he began to try his hand doing play-by-play for local minor hockey games so parents and grandparents didn’t have to miss a game during pandemic restrictions.

Seth quickly turned heads with his humour, wit and natural talent and became a viral sensation when TSN’s James Duthie shared one of Seth’s iconic one-liners on social media.

Since then, Seth has blossomed into the most in-demand play-by-play voice in the province and currently broadcasts for three minor hockey teams, including the Avalon Celtics U11 A, St. John’s Hitmen U13 AAA, and Pinnacle Growlers U18 AAA. Somehow, he still finds time to strap on the skates himself as a forward with the U15 A Avalon Celtics.

Seth’s rising stardom even caught the eye of the NHL. In November 2022, Seth was named a member of the NHL’s Power Players Youth Advisory Board, a new initiative that selects young hockey fans to help advise the NHL on hockey-related topics important to their generation.

Fans can tune in to Seth’s debut at NLGrowlers.com/radio or at FloHockey.tv. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm NT. The pregame show will begin 15 minutes prior to puck drop.
