Game Story

The Newfoundland Growlers extended their winning streak to seven games with a 5-4 overtime win over the Maine Mariners on Friday night at Mary Brown’s Centre.

Nate Kallen opened the scoring for the Mariners with 6:15 left in the 1st where he beat Luke Cavallin on the powerplay with a shot over the glove to make it 1-0 Maine.

Brett Budgell replied for the Growlers with just nine seconds remaining in the opening period as he finished off some slick passing from Newfoundland to make it 1-1 after the first.

Matt Santos grabbed one back for the visitors three minutes into the middle frame newly appointed top line wingers Todd Skirving and Derian Plouffe both replied for Newfoundland – the second a powerplay strike to put the Growlers up 3-2 after 40 minutes.

Tim Doherty once again tied things up after his goal required review to make it 3-3 with 12:18 to go in regulation.

Just as Tommy Miller appeared to seal it for Newfoundland with a 1:25 to go in the game, Santos banged one home with 20 seconds left for the Mariners to force overtime in a 4-4 stalemate.

Hometown hero Brett Budgell notched his second of the night to win it as he willed the puck over the line following a scrum in the Mariners crease to give the Growlers a thrilling 5-4 win on home ice.
