Game Story

The Newfoundland Growlers opened their series with the Iowa Heartlanders on an exciting note in a 4-3 overtime win on Wednesday night at Mary Brown’s Centre.

Tommy Parrottino opened the scoring for Iowa inside the first four minutes of the game as he redirected a point shot past Luke Cavallin to make it 1-0 Heartlanders.

Zach White doubled the Heartlanders lead with five minutes to go in the first with another nifty tip to bring it to 2-0 Iowa.

Todd Skirving got the Growlers on the board just before the first intermission with a scrambled effort on the powerplay to cut it to 2-1 Heartlanders going into the 2nd.

Michael Joyaux got in on the man advantage scoring with a seeing eye snipe from the blueline to tie things at 2-2 six minutes into the middle frame.

Cole Stallard took back the Iowa lead with five minutes left in the 2nd as he sniped one over the glove of Cavallin to make it 3-2 Heartlanders heading into the third period.

Skirving notched his second of the night with 7:02 left in regulation to bring it to 3-3 in the dying stages of the game.

Pavel Gogolev secured the second point and the victory for Newfoundland with 50 seconds left in overtime with a powerplay blast to take home a 4-3 Growlers win.
