Growlers Announce You Can Play Partnership

ST. JOHN’S, NL – The Newfoundland Growlers, proud affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced their support of the LGBTQ+ community and partnership with the You Can Play Project today. As part of the partnership, the Newfoundland Growlers have introduced limited edition STAND PROUD Pride Tank Tops as well as a Pride-themed game at Mile One Centre during the 2020-2021 season. The Newfoundland Growlers support any teammate, coach or fan who brings heart, energy and passion to the rink. We believe all hockey programs - from professionals to youth organizations - should provide a safe, positive and inclusive environment for players and families regardless of race, colour, religion, national origin, gender identity or expression, disability, sexual orientation and socio-economic status.

“As an organization, we are proud to have taken a leadership role in promoting inclusion not only in sports but in everyday life,” said Growlers owner Dean MacDonald. “We have always believed that it is critical we use our platform to promote inclusion and other important causes that affect the lives of those living in Newfoundland and Labrador.”

The You Can Play Project works to ensure the safety and inclusion for all who participate in sports, including LGBTQ+ athletes, coaches and fans. We achieve this by creating a community of allies that is able to foster a true sense of belonging. This becomes possible when sports teams sharpen the focus on the person’s skills, work ethic, and competitive spirit, not their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. The Growlers are proud to bring this initiative to Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Growlers themed Pride Tank Top features a Pride coloured Newfoundland Growlers logo on the chest and similarly themed “STAND PROUD” styled vertically on the back. The tank tops are on sale now at shop.nlgrowlers.com and $5 from every top sold will go directly to the You Can Play Project.

Details including the date, local community partner, and fan experience surrounding the Growlers first-ever Pride Night will be released at a later date as the ECHL continues to finalize the 2020-2021 league schedule.
